Aerial Work Vehicle Types

Aerial work vehicles - also sold as aerial lift trucks, bucket trucks, cherry pickers and manlifts - are classified by boom geometry and by whether the platform is insulated. CLW builds the following types on truck chassis:

• Telescopic bucket trucks. Straight, multi-section booms for the fastest reach at height; common for signage, lighting, building maintenance and tree work.
• Articulated boom lifts. Jointed booms that reach up and over obstructions; the better choice for dense street furniture, bridges and canopy work.
• Insulated utility bucket trucks. Dielectric-tested booms and buckets for live-line distribution work, with insulation class, leakage test and grounding specified to the utility standard.
• Cherry pickers and small manlifts. 12-16 m articulated units on light 4x2 chassis for municipal, signage and facilities teams.
• Special-purpose units. Lighting towers, camera platforms, window-cleaning and fire-access booms configured around the task rather than a catalogue number.

Boom type is not a cosmetic choice. A telescopic boom is faster on long reaches; an articulated boom gets around obstacles but has more joints to inspect. Utility buyers should specify insulation class and test voltage first, then chassis and bucket capacity.

Working Height, Reach and Chassis

Working height is measured to the platform floor plus roughly 2 m for the operator, so a 20 m unit gives about 22 m of usable reach. Standard CLW working heights run 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 25, 28, 33 and 45 m, with bucket capacities of 200-400 kg and one or two work positions.

Chassis sizing follows the boom, not the other way round. A 12-16 m articulated unit fits a light 4x2 ISUZU or DONGFENG carrier; 20-28 m booms need a heavier 4x2 or 6x4 chassis with wider outrigger spread; 33-45 m units are built on 6x4 or 8x4 carriers with stability calculations for the deployed boom. Outriggers must be able to reach firm ground, so tell us the site access width, ground condition and any slope. 4x4 chassis are available for utility, forestry and emergency response work.

Safety and Control Systems

Height access equipment is only as good as its interlocks. The specification should include:

• Outrigger position sensing and boom interlock that prevents operation until all jacks are set.
• Load moment or stability monitoring, tilt alarm and travel-lock detection.
• Dual controls - basket and ground - with emergency stop and emergency lowering independent of the engine.
• Basket guard rails, harness anchor points, gate interlock and non-slip floor.
• Insulation test record and class marking for utility booms, plus grounding provision.
• Scene lighting, amber beacon and reflective chevrons for road works.

Ask for the load chart, outrigger force diagram and factory test record with the quotation. These documents are what your safety officer and registration authority will ask for, and they are difficult to add after the vehicle is built.

• 12-16 m articulated aerial work vehicle: roughly USD 35,000-55,000
• 18-20 m telescopic bucket truck: roughly USD 55,000-75,000
• 25-28 m telescopic or articulated unit: roughly USD 75,000-100,000
• 33-45 m utility or heavy boom: roughly USD 100,000-160,000

Working height, boom type, insulation class, chassis brand, bucket capacity and whether the unit needs a second work position drive the price. A like-for-like comparison should list boom sections, working height, bucket load, outrigger span, chassis model and safety devices line by line.

Standards, Export and Operator Training

CLW builds the complete vehicle to MIIT catalog requirements and supplies certificate of origin, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, boom load test and insulation test records for export. Where your market requires EN 280, OSHA or an equivalent national standard, we review the design against that standard before production and provide the technical file for local approval.

Lead time is 20-35 working days for standard 12-25 m units and 35-55 working days for 30-45 m or insulated utility builds. Shipment is by RoRo or flat rack. Every unit ships with an operator manual, maintenance schedule and training video; factory training for your crew can be arranged before dispatch, and spare-parts kits are quoted with the vehicle.
